1. Define the use period

Explain how long the sticker is expected to remain in place.

For example:

  • short promotion/event;
  • temporary wayfinding or campaign;
  • seasonal display;
  • changeable information;
  • medium/longer-term application;
  • unknown duration but removal will eventually matter.

This is more useful than assuming every “removable” adhesive has the same time limit or behavior.

2. Identify the exact surface

Removal behavior depends on more than the sticker itself.

Describe the surface as accurately as possible, including whether it is:

  • glass;
  • painted/coated;
  • metal;
  • plastic;
  • smooth panel/board;
  • another known substrate;
  • new, aged, delicate or otherwise important to protect.

Also mention existing coatings, paint condition or other surface sensitivity if known.

A claim such as “removes cleanly” should not be treated as universal across all of these surfaces.

3. Decide what matters during use

A temporary sticker still has to perform its intended job while installed.

Tell the printer about conditions such as:

  • indoor/outdoor use;
  • handling/contact;
  • moisture/cleaning exposure;
  • movement/transport;
  • curved or unusual surface geometry;
  • whether edge lifting or movement would be unacceptable;
  • any other condition that matters to the application.

The goal is to balance the need to stay in place with the later removal requirement rather than treating “strongest adhesive” or “easiest removal” as automatic answers.

4. Define what a successful removal means for your job

Removal priorities can differ.

For one project, the main concern may be minimizing residue. For another, it may be protecting paint/coating, reducing cleanup, or simply allowing graphics to be changed.

State the consequence that matters:

  • residue would be a problem;
  • surface damage would be a serious problem;
  • the sticker must be replaced frequently;
  • the surface is valuable/sensitive;
  • removal is ordinary maintenance rather than a critical risk.

This helps determine whether testing or a different application route should be considered.

5. Do not assume “removable” means repositionable

A sticker intended to be removable later is not automatically designed for repeated repositioning during application or reuse after removal.

If repositioning, repeated placement or reuse is genuinely required, state that as a separate requirement and have it confirmed for the actual product rather than inferred from the word “removable.”

6. Consider a surface test when removal risk matters

Where the surface is important, sensitive, unusual or costly to repair, a representative sample/test can help reduce uncertainty before a larger application.

A useful test may check:

  • basic application behavior;
  • appearance;
  • initial adhesion;
  • a controlled removal attempt;
  • obvious residue or surface reaction.

Testing still has limits. A short test cannot automatically predict what will happen after every possible duration, temperature, cleaning process, surface aging condition or outdoor exposure.

If removal performance is business-critical, the final decision should be tied to the exact material/adhesive data and realistic application conditions.

7. Temporary does not mean suitable for every surface

Avoid selecting a sticker solely because it is described as temporary.

Some surfaces can be sensitive, poorly bonded, freshly coated, textured, contaminated, aged or otherwise difficult to predict. If the surface condition matters, include that in the brief and avoid a blanket removal guarantee.

8. What to send when asking for a removable-sticker specification

Send:

  • application/use;
  • exact surface;
  • expected use period;
  • indoor/outdoor conditions;
  • handling/cleaning exposure;
  • what must happen at removal;
  • whether residue or surface damage is a critical concern;
  • size;
  • quantity;
  • artwork status;
  • target date;
  • UAE delivery/project location;
  • photos of the surface where useful.

If you are unsure whether a removable construction is appropriate, say so and ask for the job to be assessed from the application rather than choosing an adhesive label by name.
